Terms of use

Last updated: 17 October 2026

This is a translation. The French version of these terms is the one that legally applies.

These terms govern the use of SurfLingo: the surflingo.app website, SurfLingo Player and SurfLingo AI on Mac, the browser extension and the mobile apps. By creating an account or using SurfLingo, you accept them.

SurfLingo is published by a French sole trader, whose identity and contact details are given in the legal notice. For any question: support@surflingo.app.

What SurfLingo does

SurfLingo helps you learn a language with the videos you watch: interactive subtitles, one-click definitions and translations, word difficulty levels, a vocabulary notebook and spaced review.

Some features rely on artificial intelligence services (transcription, translation, explanations). Their output can contain mistakes: it helps you learn, it does not replace a reference dictionary or a teacher.

Your account

SurfLingo is meant for people aged 15 and over. You open an account with a valid email address and keep your password to yourself: whatever is done from your account is deemed to be done by you. If you think someone else has used it, write to us right away.

You can delete your account at any time, from your account page on the website or from the iPhone app, as explained in the privacy policy.

Free plan, subscriptions and purchases

SurfLingo has a free plan, with no card required and no ads, whose limits are shown on the site. Premium features are available by subscription (monthly, six-month or yearly) and, during dated offers, with a lifetime licence.

Prices are shown including taxes at the time of purchase; that price is the one that applies. Payment goes through PayPal or, for Apple Pay and Google Pay, through Stripe. A subscription renews automatically at each term at your plan’s price, which does not change for as long as you stay subscribed.

No commitment: you cancel at any time from your account, online. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period already paid, until which you keep Premium access; apart from the right of withdrawal (below), a started period is not refunded pro rata. Your words stay in your notebook after the subscription ends.

You have the 14-day right of withdrawal provided by French consumer law, starting from your purchase. To use it, write to us at support@surflingo.app: we refund you through the payment method you used, within 14 days.

A purchase made in the iPhone app follows different rules, those of the App Store: they are just below.

The iPhone app and App Store purchases

Purchases and subscriptions made in the SurfLingo AI app for iPhone are billed by Apple to your App Store account, at the price the App Store shows: Apple collects the payment when you confirm the purchase. For these purchases, what follows replaces what the previous section says about payment, cancellation and refunds.

A subscription renews automatically for a period of the same length: your App Store account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the end of the current period, unless you have turned off automatic renewal at least 24 hours before that end. You do this on the iPhone, in Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or in the app, which is in French, under Premium › Gérer mon abonnement (Manage my subscription). You keep Premium access until the end of the period already paid for. Deleting the app or your SurfLingo account does not cancel the subscription.

Refunds for a purchase made on the App Store, including under the right of withdrawal, are handled by Apple under its own rules: you request them at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot refund or cancel a purchase billed by Apple ourselves.

The iPhone app is also governed by Apple’s standard licence agreement for App Store apps (the “Licensed Application End User License Agreement”), which applies together with these terms. Support for the app is provided by SurfLingo, not by Apple: support@surflingo.app.

Film rentals

SurfLingo offers works by independent creators for rent, distributed with their agreement. A rental gives a personal, private viewing right for the period shown before payment. It gives no right to copy, download outside SurfLingo, redistribute or screen the work in public. Each work remains the property of its authors.

The free film catalogue

The SurfLingo apps also offer a catalogue of free films: works their rights holders have published under a Creative Commons licence. Each film is credited (author, licence, source) and plays directly from where it is published, on its host’s site. We do not alter it: SurfLingo’s interactive subtitles are displayed on top.

Each work remains subject to its licence: if you reuse it outside SurfLingo, it is up to you to respect it.

A rights holder who does not want their work in the catalogue can ask for its removal at support@surflingo.app: the request is handled within 24 hours.

Videos you watch elsewhere

SurfLingo Player and the extension work on the videos you watch yourself, on the platforms where you have lawful access. SurfLingo does not provide or host those videos and has no link with those platforms, whose names are only mentioned to say where the tool works.

You remain bound by the terms of each platform you use. What SurfLingo produces from a video (subtitles, saved words) is for your personal learning: you do not republish it.

What you agree not to do

Use SurfLingo for illegal purposes or to infringe the rights of others; share your account or licence beyond what your plan allows; bypass the free plan’s limits, technical protections or anti-abuse measures; extract the service’s content, dictionaries or answers in bulk; disrupt its operation or try to access other people’s data.

If you break these rules, we may suspend or close your account, after warning you where possible. A paid subscription is then refunded only for the unused period, except in case of fraud.

What users publish

In the game, some content is seen by other users: your surf nickname, the title of the band resolutions you create, and what you write in band games, such as the fake translations in Bluff or the sentences in the telephone game. Your friends, the members of your line-up and of your resolutions, and the players in your games see them: you allow us to show them this content to run these games.

SurfLingo has a zero-tolerance policy for objectionable content (hateful, harassing, sexual, violent, discriminatory or illegal) and for users who abuse others. You agree not to publish anything of the kind.

A filter rejects abusive words before they are published, in nicknames, resolution titles and game texts. It does not catch everything: in the iPhone app, any nickname or text from another user can be reported, and its author blocked. Elsewhere, write to us at support@surflingo.app. A blocked user is not notified, and only the person who blocked them can lift the block.

Every report is reviewed by a person within 24 hours. Content that breaks these rules is removed, and its author’s account may be suspended or deleted, without notice where the seriousness of the facts justifies it.

Your content

What you add to SurfLingo (words, notes, preferences, messages to support) remains yours. You only allow us to store and process it to run your account, as described in the privacy policy. You can export or delete it.

Intellectual property

The SurfLingo brand, logo, mascot, texts and code belong to its publisher. Your subscription or licence gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right of use: not a right to copy, resell or modify. Third-party dictionaries and components remain under their own licences, detailed on the dictionaries and open source pages.

Availability and liability

We do our best to keep SurfLingo running without interruption or error, without being able to guarantee it: maintenance, a provider outage or a change on a video platform can interrupt it or change a feature.

We can only be held liable for direct damage caused by a fault on our part. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the law grants you as a consumer, including the legal guarantee of conformity for digital content and services.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when a feature arrives or the law changes. For a significant change, we notify you by email or in the app before it takes effect; if you disagree, you can cancel and delete your account.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by French law. If there is a problem, write to us first at support@surflingo.app: we will look for a solution with you. Failing that, you can refer the matter free of charge to the consumer mediator named in the legal notice, or to the competent court.
