   SurfLingo picks up the sound coming out of your Mac, just like your headphones do. It doesn’t need the picture.

   It recognizes

   The model slices the sound into tiny pieces and finds the most likely words, like your ear filling in a half-heard sentence. It learned by listening to thousands of hours of speech.

3. 03
   It writes

   The words appear as clickable subtitles, colored by level. When Parakeet isn’t sure about a word, it would rather show nothing than the wrong word.

THE MODELS BEHIND IT

  25 European languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese… It writes the words as they are spoken, in real time.

• Qwen3-ASR

  About thirty languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It waits for the end of each sentence, then writes it in one go.

• Kotoba-Whisper

  A Japanese specialist.

• NB-Whisper · KB-Whisper

  Norwegian and Swedish, trained by the national libraries of Norway and Sweden.

Parakeet is the default engine. For other languages, you pick the right model in the app’s settings, and SurfLingo tells you which one recognizes your language best.

By default, everything happens on your Mac. The model downloads once, then runs on the Apple Silicon chip: the sound of your show is not sent over the internet. The only exception, if you choose it: the optional OpenAI engine, which goes online with your own key.
